The solemn meeting devoted to the International Children's Book Day 2001
On March 28, the solemn meeting devoted to the International Children's Book Day 2001 took place at the Russian Cultural Foundation. Sergei V. Mikhalkov, RBBY president presided over the meeting.
The meeting programme was consisted of:
- presenting of IBBY Honourable certificate degrees and diplomas of RBBY;
- the concert of young musicians and winners of diplomas and grants of the International Charitable Fund "New names" ( President Ms. Voronova I.N.);
- the exposition of the International travelling exhibition IBBY - IBBY Honour List 2000).
While opening the meeting S.Mikhalkov in particular said:
"As you know, according to the decision of IBBY the 2nd of April - the birthday of X.K.Andersen- - is celebrated as International Children's Book Day ( ICBD) for the purpose of drawing national and international community's attention to literature, book art and book culture for children, and to the problem of children's book accessibility and the spreading of children's reading in the world.
On this day, or on the eve, every national section - there are 68 of them in IBBY - arranges information work to attract public attention to this Day and gathers its members as well as friends supporting the National section with the purpose of reviewing what has been done.
Every IBBY national section should arrange the fulfilment of IBBY's programmes and projects. We are endeavouring to do this also.
Our section submits our representatives - artists, authors, and translators - for international reward's competitions. Our illustrators always participate in international artist's exhibitions. RBBY tries to be involved in all of IBBY's programmes. As one of the tasks of our section is the popularisation of modern values of literature and book culture for children over the World, for this purpose we use not only the programmes and projects of IBBY, but search for new forms of popularisation through co-operation. Thus, by close collaboration with the Centre of Russian Science and Culture in Prague, we have twice arranged Russian Children's Book Days in Czech Republic. The Days held in March had been devoted to the contemporary St.Petersburg children's book. This experiens will allow us to develop such a form of popularisation by conclusion of the agreements about Cupertino with other like Centres. Besides, we are developing the co-operation with Abby's sections of Ukraine, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Finland and others. We are having talks about bilateral and multilateral seminars on all professions of book culture for children.
Why I speak so persistently about the popularisation of Russian national children's book values? Because around the World there is not quite enough information about modern Russian literature and book culture for children. To eliminate this gap in knowledge now we use the other form of popularisation. In particular, our secretariat has created RBBY information web-site in Russian and English languages. It is included into IBBY information network. On this site for the first time the information about activities of IBBY is being given for experts of Russia and CIS. Besides that, the exhibition stand of RBBY at the annual International Book Fairs in Moscow by now has turned into the traditional form of popularisation of the best in the national and the World's literature and book culture for children. The General Directorate of International Exhibitions and Book Fairs sponsors this stand. I would like to express my gratitude to its General Director Nikolai F. Ovsjannikov and Deputy Director Nina N. Sudjina.
In my point of view of a person, who has been living in the children's literature for a long time and understanding clearly, how its trends can develop, we act without noise but do important work. I would like to underline that the main part of our activities, I mean the members of our organisation, is purely public. The Secretariat plays a role of an organiser and informant, but the projects are being developed and run by the members of RBBY on their own, that is very important for the development of our sphere of culture. An original project of All - Russia Contest of Children's Book "The paternal home" is being realised in the framework of the RBBY activities by Georgi Udin, RBBY Vice-president, an artist. The project "Modern illustration of children's book" is making the successful headway by efforts of Olga Korf, a RBBY EC member, a literary critic, Director of Moscow House of Children's Book. Alexander Shevchenko, a Vice-president of RBBY, Director of the publishing house "Samovar", has carried out the original project "The festival of Russian Fairy Tale" in Suzdal. As far as I know the similar project, but in the international scale, is being realised by Nicholai Mashovets, a member of the RBBY EC, Director of the publishing house "Russian Family". Igor Nagaev, Editor-in-chief of the magazine "The Children's Literature", runs the informational column about activities of IBBY and RBBY. Every year the newspaper "Pionerskaja Pravda" makes a special international issue devoted to ICBD, and I would like to express my gratitude to Olga Grekova, a member of RBBY EC, and Nina Rozhdestvenskaja, the Deputy Editor, for that.
The programme of our solemn meeting has also been raised from the Cupertino and creative work of the members and the friends of RBBY. In conclusion of my introductory speech, I would like to thank all of those who have sponsored this meeting: Russian Cultural Foundation, within the framework of which our Board exists; International Charitable Fund "New names" and its president I.Voronova and her collaborators; publishing houses "Samovar", "Rosman", "Kultura I obrazovanije, ""Zolotoj Vek" (Saint - Petersburg)".
